  • Germany’s cabinet has approved a roadmap to phase out the use of coal, oil and gas by 2045, reaffirming a climate strategy focused on electrification.

Based on Germany’s Climate Action Program 2026 (KSP 2026), the roadmap lays out the policy framework and the key strategies Germany will be pursuing in the various sectors in order to achieve its goal of climate neutrality and thus transition away from the use of fossil fuels no later than 2045. Measures documented include actions affecting the energy, transport, and building sectors as well as industry. Carbon pricing, research and innovation are also covered alongside international alliances and cooperation agreements.

Quoting Der Spiegel magazine, Reuters reports that under the plan, “Germany will examine whether an agreed deadline to end coal-fired power generation by 2038 can be brought ‌forward to 2035.” Other highlights from the plan include a strategy to ensure battery-electric cars make up 100% of new passenger vehicle registrations by 2035 and a focus on the use of heat pumps in buildings.

Writing for the German news channel DW, journalist Rana Taha reports comment from Germany’s center-left Social Democratic Party, that the fossil phaseout plan is “linked to the Iran war and its impact on fuel supplies worldwide” and is “feasible.”

However, while several environmental organisations welcomed Berlin’s plan, some highlighted that it “contradicted some recent government decisions.”
