Enel Green Power Italia is to work with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri to find ways of using green hydrogen in ports and shipping, as Reuters reports. The Eugenio Montale power plant, at the north-western port town of La Spezia, will be the site of the first testing, and it appears that pilot-scale facilities to produce green hydrogen would need to be installed at the plant, as it is currently run on natural gas and coal. The  intention of the work is to study the supply of green hydrogen to naval, submarine and surface vessels, as well as industrial port facilities, including hydrogen storage, and the results will be of interest around the world. Fincantieri is already working with Swiss shipping company MSC and Italy’s gas utility Snam on designing a green hydrogen powered ship.
