German utility EnBW and engineering company Bosch have launched a 5 MW battery at the site of EnBW’s coal-fired Heilbronn power plant in south-west Germany. The battery is designed to store power produced from the plant for release to balance the power market, an arrangement which the CEO of the joint venture between the two companies describes as being able to make money. Such innovations are likely to pop up more and more over the coming years as generators adapt to higher shares of renewable energies. Bosch and EnBW, for their part, see the Heilbronn battery as their first step in their efforts to develop solutions involving batteries.
