DTE Energy is to build a new 1100 MW gas-fired power plant in St. Clair County, Michigan, USA. To be known as the Blue Water Energy Center, the new plant will replace the generation capacity of three coal-fired plants at River Rouge, St. Clair and Trenton Channel, which will be closed between 2020 and 2023. The transition to modern gas-fired technology will make the power generation “70 percent cleaner and 40 percent more efficient”, according to DTE, which has an aim of phasing out coal firing by 2040, down from the 65% of its power generation today. Construction is to commence next year, and will be carried out by Kiewit Engineering, using GE Power equipment.
