Capsol Technologies has been awarded a feasibility study by environmental services company SUEZ for an energy-from-waste (EfW) plant in France.
SUEZ recovers more than 5 million tonnes of waste each year, turning it into 7.3 TWh of energy. The new plant, which will feature carbon capture and storage (CCS), aims to capture more than 150,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. Approximately 50% of the CO2 is biogenic, enabling negative emissions.
The purpose of the study is to obtain key technical and cost inputs for further development of the carbon capture solution.
According to estimates by the International Energy Agency (IEA), bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) will need to reach 190 million tonnes of CO2 per annum by 2030 in the net zero emissions by 2050 scenario. Waste incineration with CCS plays an important part in the roadmap to net zero by capturing and storing the biogenic CO2 from household waste.
Says Wendy Lam, CEO of Capsol Technologies, “When building a new energy-from-waste plant with integrated carbon capture it’s possible to achieve negative emissions, as approximately half of the CO2 is biogenic and therefore part of the natural carbon cycle. This makes it one of the most impactful uses of our technology in advancing the transition to a net zero future.”
