Cement manufacturer Lehigh Hanson is to embark on a feasibility study for installing a carbon capture and storage facility at its cement plant in Edmonton, Canada. The study is to be carried out with the help of the Saskatchewan-based International CCS Knowledge Centre, the research organisation set up by BHP and SaskPower after the latter’s experience in pioneering a CCS facility at Unit 3 of the Boundary Dam power plant. Funding of CAD$1.4 million (US$1.07 million/€900,000) for the study is being supplied by Emissions Reduction Alberta, which has identified the project as being of high strategic value. As the article from the Canadian Journal of Commerce notes, should it be built, the facility would be the first at a cement plant in North America, and would thus offer a blueprint for other cement plants in the region and also globally.
