Swedish-Swiss electrical engineering company ABB has joined the Norway-based HyPilot project, which aims to demonstrate that “green hydrogen can be produced at higher levels of efficiency using Hystar’s patented Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolysers”, and therefore at lower cost. Hystar is a Norwegian manufacturer of electrolysers.

ABB will supply low-harmonic insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) rectifiers and DC-DC converters to the project, which will feature a 1 MW electrolyser, and be up and running this year. The plan is to operate the project for 10,000 hours, gathering data on operation and demonstrating the cost effectiveness of the technology.

ABB joins Equinor, Yara, and Gassco (who will host the project at its Kårstø Gas Processing Plant in Rogaland) in carrying out the endeavour.
