This week, we continue with the development of the emissions theme within the Handbook with the publication of a further combustion File relating to Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons.

CF 68: ‘How do I determine PAH (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) and related compounds in the emissions from combustion plants?’

This Combustion File deals with the essentials and precautions for the determination of PAHs in the combustion products from a boiler or furnace. It has been contributed by Loretta Bonfanti of ENEL, Italy, and refereed by Dr Anna Ciajolo of the University of Naples. My thanks to both these contributors to the Handbook.

IFRF Members may read or download the new file by entering www.handbook.ifrf.net and selecting ‘New combustion Files’ after agreeing to the disclaimer.

Further guidance on the background to PAHs is available in a linked Combustion File (CF190 ‘What are Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs)?’) published last year by my colleague Patrick Lavery of the University of Glamorgan. CF190 is in the open domain, and may be found by searching the Handbook with the keyword ‘PAH’.
