  • Industry leaders, trade unions, and politicians met last week to discuss how to secure £500m of government money to fund the Humber Hydrogen project.

Led by National Gas, Centrica, Equinor, and SSE Thermal, Humber Hydrogen is working to connect hydrogen production and storage across an industrial hub which includes key sites at Aldbrough Hydrogen Storage, Easington, H2H Saltend, Immingham, and Keadby Next Generation Power Station.

In June 2025, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero confirmed the UK government’s landmark new funding to create the UK’s first regional hydrogen transport and storage network, connecting hydrogen producers with end users, including power stations and industry, for the first time.

According to a BBC report on the meeting, sponsor Labour MP Emma Hardy said the Humber was the best place for Britain’s first hydrogen network, which would bring jobs, investment, and a huge potential for expansion.

John Wilson, Head of Hydrogen Clusters at National Gas, said the Humber was “the obvious choice,” offering “industrial demand, infrastructure, supply chains, geological storage and the skilled people needed to unlock Britain’s clean energy ambitions.”

Mr Wilson stated that hydrogen offers “a win-win solution for British industry – bolstering our energy security, supporting decarbonisation and securing our critical industries’ future. Alongside this, it will ensure continued employment to the Humber’s skilled workforce and create more local jobs, including for apprentices and graduates.

Quoting the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the BBC reports that Humber Hydrogen could deliver up to 3GW of hydrogen production, supporting industries such as chemicals, steel and cement, while unlocking new opportunities in areas like sustainable aviation fuel.
