  • Honda Research Institute USA, Inc. (HRI-US) has announced a $2.6 million investment to expand its advanced research into quantum and other nanotechnologies, hydrogen fuel cells, carbon capture technologies, next-generation EV batteries, and battery recycling. The investment will fund the establishment of an Advanced Materials Science Lab at Ohio State University’s SciTech campus in Columbus.

The new HRI lab is scheduled to open in the fourth quarter of 2025.

This is the latest investment by Honda at the OSU SciTech campus. Honda established its 99P Labs on the campus in 2018, having initiated a long-standing partnership in 1987 with the purchase of the Transportation Research Center near the company’s production facilities in Ohio.

In 2023, Honda announced an investment of $15 million as the lead foundational partner in The Ohio State Battery Cell R&D Center, which is also located on the SciTech campus.

As reported by Carbon Herald, locating the lab within a university ecosystem aligns with Honda’s aim to “accelerate discovery and bridge the gap between academic research and industrial application.” According to reporter Violet George, the effort reflects a “growing trend among automakers to embed sustainability-focused R&D directly within major research institutions.”
