A reminder to all member and partner organisations that IFRF Ltd is ready to support you in potential national and EU bids for externally funded projects. As a registered organisation (PIC number- 877879489), IFRF Ltd could offer to lead or contribute to the dissemination work-package where the project relates to fuels/decarbonisation in the energy and industrial fields. IFRF Ltd already has experience in proposal preparation for this Dissemination WP lead role, having taken part in the LabyrintH2 bid I reported on last year.
I include below typical wording on the credentials of the IFRF for your information. Please consider IFRF Ltd as a potential partner in any bids you may be planning.
IFRF Description –The International Flame Research Foundation (IFRF) is a ‘not-for-profit’ research hub of the global industrial combustion community, facilitating access to research and to disseminaton information worldwide. With over 80 members, its mission is to advance applied combustion research and promote cooperation and information transfer throughout the international combustion and energy arena.
IFRF has significant experience in organising and running workshops and conferences through its ongoing programme of events. The most recent event was the 3-day IFRF 2025 Conference in Sheffield UK in June this year, entitled ‘Sustainable and safe industrial combustion’, with around 90 participants. This included a special half-day session on a number of the leading EU industrial decarbonisation and fuel-switch demonstrator projects, including a keynote from Sean O’Reagain, Directorate-General for Research and Innovation, European Commission. Also highly relevant is an earlier IFRF technical meeting held in Paris, France in Oct 2022 entitled ‘Hydrogen for Decarbonisation’, which was an official side event of the European Hydrogen Week 2022. IFRF have also provided the dissemination role in previous EU FP7 projects entitled DEBCO and RELCOM.
IFRF would leverage its international network, dissemination and events organising skills to lead/participate in the Dissemination WP. Resources are in place with a team of technical and administrative staff, including for example an Executive Director, Communications Manager and Combustion Industry newsletter editor.
IFRF Offering
Events IFRF has significant experience in organising and running workshops and conferences through its ongoing programme of events. This includes the TOTeM (Topic Orientated Technical Meetings) series which in 2026 is planned to cover the topic-‘Oxyfuel combustion and CCUS’. 2027 will also see the 21st IFRF Conference organised since 1969, to be held in France, which have attracted up to 250 participants. Specialist/ academic journals IFRF has its own web-based, free to access, Industrial Combustion Journal. Additionally, selected presentations at the recent IFRF conference are being published as special editions in the high impact journals of Frontiers and Measurement-Energy where IFRF staff and members have various Associated Editor and Editor roles. Relevant previous activities-
2025 IFRF 3-day conference Entitled ‘Sustainable and safe industrial combustion’ held on 16-19 June 2025 at the Sheffield Town Hall. The conference included parallel technical sessions on hydrogen/ process heating/ measurement technology/ emerging technologies/ ammonia/ solid fuels/ modelling/ heat recovery & carbon capture/ metal combustion, posters, an interactive update on the leading EU Demonstrator Projects relating to combustion and concluded with a panel discussion on burner technology & combustion equipment. Flame characterisation workshop Entitled ‘Flame characterisation in industrial combustion systems and experimental validation/numerical simulation of industrial flames’ the workshop was held on 25 April 2023 in Rouen Paris. Organised by IFRF in collaboration with the Combustion Institute, it was attended by 63 delegates and covered: flame characterisation in large industrial combustion systems; design, testing and analysis of experimental methods to measure key flame properties; and numerical modelling of industrial flames. Decarbonising combustion in hard-to-abate sectors Topic Orientated Technical Meeting (TOTeM) 50 held on 5-6 December 2023 at the Politecnico di Milano in Piacenza, Italy. The TOTeM was attended by 86 delegates from 52 individual organisations which were spread across 10 countries. Industrial attendance was high at 77% of the total delegates, reflecting the importance of the decarbonisation topic to industry. The programme included 18 presentations, 8 ‘fast’ presentations and a vibrant poster session. Hydrogen for Decarbonisation TOTeM 48 held on 13th of October 2022 near Paris, was an official side event of the European Hydrogen Week 2022. It included an overview of the hydrogen strategy for a climate neutral Europe, an in depth presentation on the subtleties and complexities of hydrogen combustion and a round table on the safety approach of new fuels. A record number of 110 participants from 13 countries attended, with 45% from 19 universities and industrial participants from 32 companies. Decarbonated Combustion in Industrial Process IFRF and the Combustion Institute collaborated on an Industry Round Table half day session, held at the 39th International Symposium on Combustion, 24-29 July 2022 in Vancouver, Canada. The event gathered representatives from all the main combustion laboratories around the world. Hybrid in nature due to ongoing travel restrictions in some locations, the event attracted some 150-200 participants attending in person, with more joining virtually. Dissemination lead in FP7 projects DEBCO and RELCOM IFRF coordinated the creation of a dedicated project website, managed meeting schedules and partner communication, and edited interim and final reports for both projects: DEBCO- Demonstration of Large Scale Biomass Co-Firing and Supply Chain Integration, Jan 2008-Dec 2012
RELCOM- Reliable and Efficient Combustion of Oxygen/Coal/Recycled Flue Gas Mixtures, Dec 2011- Nov 2015
