The Netherlands is investing €750 million (approximately $822 million USD) in subsidies for 602 MW of sustainable hydrogen production projects.
This funding, allocated through the second round of the subsidy scheme for large-scale production fully renewable hydrogen via electrolysis (OWE), will support the construction of eleven new electrolysers, which will produce hydrogen using renewable electricity. The projects are expected to significantly increase the country’s capacity for green hydrogen production, with the 602 MW capacity being three times larger than the largest hydrogen plant currently under construction in the Netherlands according to the Netherlands Enterprise Agency.
The subsidies are intended to accelerate the development of sustainable hydrogen production by providing financial support for companies to gain experience with the technology, permit procedures, and the regulation of certificates for their sustainable hydrogen. The 602 MW of electrolysis capacity is expected to be enough to power 5,000 trucks with hydrogen for a year.
The projects receiving subsidies involve the construction of electrolysers of 0.5 MW or more, which will produce hydrogen from renewable electricity sources. These projects will play a crucial role in decarbonizing industries like refineries and the chemical industry, which currently rely on hydrogen produced from fossil fuels. The Netherlands is aiming to significantly increase its green hydrogen production capacity, with targets of 600 MW installed by 2025 and 4 GW by 2030.
