Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and Hokuetsu Corporation, one of Japan’s leading paper manufacturers, launched a CO2 capture demonstration test at Niigata Mill (Niigata City), in November.
In the first ever application of MHI’s “CO2MPACT™ Mobile” capture system to the pulp and paper industry, CO2 will be captured from a chemical recovery boiler, a critical component of paper production that generates steam and electricity.
The test will enable MHI to analyse and evaluate data for commercial applications and accelerating decarbonisation efforts across the sector. The company anticipates being able to provide the industry with a solution that directly addresses CO2 emissions during production, thereby contributing to global environmental initiatives.
MHI Group has formally declared its intention to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040, and the company says it is working to decarbonise both the energy demand side and supply. From the supply side, this has led to the development of a CCUS value chain in which diverse sources of carbon emissions are integrated with carbon storage and utilisation methodologies.
