The US Department of Energy (DOE) has made a conditional commitment for a loan guarantee of up to $1.5B to Wabash Valley Resources.
The provisional financing is earmarked for repurposing an industrial gasifier that will use petroleum coke (petcoke) to create anhydrous ammonia, a crucial material needed for fertiliser production. The planned facility will be simultaneously equipped to capture and sequester 1.6 million metric tonnes of CO2 annually.
The project has the potential to become both the world’s first carbon-negative ammonia production facility and the first domestic source of fertiliser supply, producing 500,000 metric tons of anhydrous ammonia per year.
