Texas-based carbon capture company CarbonFree has agreed a deal with US Steel to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from the steel maker’s Gary Works’ blast furnaces using CarbonFree’s SkyCycle technology.
With the technology installed, the aim is to reduce 50,000 metric tonnes of CO2 per year, though if successful, the scale of the capture could be augmented. US Steel has a goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2030, and net-zero (scope 1 and scope 2) emissions by 2050. The current agreement is to span 20 years; work is slated to begin mid-year, and move into operation by 2026.
The SkyCycle technology uses captured carbon dioxide to produce calcium carbonate, which can then be used as a feedstock for making a range of products, such as paper, plastics and building materials, and in doing so reducing scope 3 emissions.
