State-owned Zimbabwe Power Company is expected to have completed two replacement coal-fired units at the Hwange Thermal Power Station, totalling 600MW, by September next year, as reported by Bloomberg. The US$1.5 billion (€1.29 billion) project aims to improve the reliability of power generation at the plant, and the two new units will be replacing 920MW of existing capacity, perhaps increasing actual power output. A flue gas desulphurisation unit is also to be installed at the plant so that it meets World Bank standards. Another interesting aspect of the work is that such projects may not in future proceed, as it has been financed by China Eximbank and delivered partly by China’s Sinohydro; China has pledged to end work on foreign coal projects.
