As foreshadowed in the previous edition of Combustion Industry News, Fortum’s Oslo Varme incineration plant has been shortlisted by the European Commission for funding for the installation of a carbon capture facility. Seventy projects were shortlisted from a total of 311 applications, with Fortum applying for just under €300 million (US$356 million) of the EU Innovation Fund’s total of €1 billion (US$1.19 billion) – a significantly large portion of the fund. As noted previously, however, with the carbon capture installation a part of the wider Project Longship (which will transport and store capture CO₂ in the North Sea), and having already secured conditional funding from the Norwegian government, and offering the potential for ‘negative’ emissions, one would image that the project has a significant chance of receiving funding. A final decision is expected before the end of this year.
