Thyssenkrupp has announced that it has successfully produced ammonia from steel mill off gases, which contain carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and hydrogen (amongst other components). The Carbon2Chem project has been funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research (contributing ~€60 million/US$68 million), and involves 16 industry and research partners (including Thyssenkrupp), as well as the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and Max Plank Society research organisations. The work was carried out at the Carbon2Chem technical centre in Duisburg, west Germany, where practical industrial conditions are simulated at a pilot plant. Last year, methanol was produced from steel mill off gases, in line with the overall project goals of creating usable chemical products from carbon-containing off gases.
