In an interesting development in the shipping world, marine transportation company Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha has announced that it will trial a demonstration-scale, portable carbon capture device in one of its ships from 2021. The unit will be developed in conjunction with Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, and will operate next to the engine room of a coal carrying vessel used by Tokyo Electric Power Co. In its trial mode, the device will capture one thousandth of the ship’s emissions, absorbing waste gas into a solution that will then be heated to release carbon dioxide, storing it on the ship. If successful, the device will be scaled up to eventually capture 20-30% of the ship’s total CO2 emissions, providing an option for the shipping industry as it seeks to reduce its environmental footprint.
